How Inkword works

Photograph a page of English — an article, an email, a book. Tap the words and phrases you did not know. Inkword writes each one a card carrying its meaning in your language, the sentence you met it in, and how it is used. Cards come back at widening intervals, because spacing is what makes a word stick.

Common questions

Nothing is due today. Is the app broken?

No — that is the method working. Cards return on a schedule of roughly one day, three days, a week, three weeks. Most days there is nothing to review, and reviewing early does not make a word stick harder. You can practise ahead from the home screen without moving the schedule.

The camera will not open.

Inkword needs camera access to read a page. If you declined it, iOS will not ask again — turn it on in Settings → Inkword → Camera. You can also pick an existing photo from your library instead of using the camera.

Scanning did not find the word I wanted.

Text recognition depends on focus and lighting. Hold the page flat, fill the frame with the paragraph rather than the whole page, and avoid shadows across the text. Any word on the recognised page can be tapped, not only the ones we suggest.

What do I get for free, and what does Pro add?

Scanning and reviewing are unlimited on both. A free account keeps up to 100 cards; Pro removes that cap and includes every Words for TOEIC®, Exam Topic Words, B1 Words, B2 Words, Academic Words and Essential Words deck. Pro is $3.99 per month or $23.99 per year, with a 7-day free trial.

What is Essential Words?

Ready-made decks of the 1,800 words that come right after the basics — 18 decks of about 100, explained in your language, so there is something to learn before your first scan. The first deck is free; one payment of $4.99 unlocks the other 17 for good. Pro includes every deck while you are subscribed, and library cards never count toward the 100-card cap.

What is Words for TOEIC®?

About 2,400 words of the TOEIC test and of working English, grouped in the Library by the settings the test uses — offices, finance, travel, dining and more. The first deck is free; one payment of $6.99 opens the rest for good, and Pro includes them while you subscribe. Decks you added earlier stay exactly as they are. TOEIC is a registered trademark of ETS. This app is not endorsed or approved by ETS.

What is Exam Topic Words?

About 2,000 words of the themes IELTS-style essays and reading return to — environment, education, technology, society and more — in 50 decks by topic. Our own list, not an official list of any exam. The first deck is free; one payment of $6.99 opens the rest for good, and Pro includes them while you subscribe. IELTS is a registered trade mark of the IELTS Partners (British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment). This app and this word list are not affiliated with, endorsed or approved by them; the list is our own.

What is B1 Words / B2 Words?

B1 Words and B2 Words are the CEFR-J lists for levels B1 and B2 — about 2,350 and 2,700 words — in 62 and 70 decks by the topics of the Cambridge B1 Preliminary exam. The first deck of each is free; one payment of $6.99 opens the rest of that set for good, and Pro includes them while you subscribe. Source: The CEFR-J Wordlist Version 1.6, compiled by Yukio Tono, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. B1 Preliminary, B2 First and Cambridge English are trademarks of Cambridge University Press & Assessment. This app is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

What is Academic Words?

957 words of lectures, papers and textbooks — the step after Essential Words, and the kind of vocabulary IELTS and TOEFL reading leans on — grouped by field in the Library. The first deck is free; one payment of $6.99 opens the rest for good, and Pro includes them while you subscribe. IELTS is a registered trademark of the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment; TOEFL is a registered trademark of ETS. This app is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

I paid but Pro is not active.

Open Profile → Subscription and tap Restore purchases. Purchases are tied to your Apple ID, so this also brings Pro and every word set you bought back on a new device. If it still does not appear, email us with the Apple receipt.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are billed by Apple, so they are cancelled in Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Inkword. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Pro stays active until the period you already paid for ends. We cannot cancel it for you — Apple does not give developers that control.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: Profile → Delete account. It asks you to confirm, then permanently removes your account and everything in it — your decks, your cards, the text you scanned and your profile. This cannot be undone and we cannot restore it afterwards.

Deleting your account does not cancel an active subscription, because Apple owns that billing relationship. Cancel it separately in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

If you cannot reach the app — you lost the device, or sign-in fails — email [email protected] from the address on the account and we will delete it for you.

Which languages are supported?

Inkword teaches English. The app itself appears in English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (Traditional or Simplified), following your iPhone's language; change it in Profile → App language. Explanations are written in your native language: Vietnamese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified or Traditional), Japanese or Korean. Change it any time from a card, or in Profile → Your Native Language.
